Pratt is one of the leading undergraduate art schools in the United States and is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD). It gets its name from Charles Pratt (1830-1891), who was an early pioneer of the natural oil industry in the United States and who, in 1886, founded and endowed the Institute, which opened in 1887.
